Title: ODEs in the Service of PDEs in Mathematical Physics

Abstract: I will show several examples of the fundamental role the study of ordinary differential equations and dynamical systems derived from them has played in understanding the long-time behavior of solutions to partial differential equations arising in mathematical physics, in particular in the study of singularity formation, as well as existence and stability of solutions with a high degree of symmetry.  Examples will be drawn from continuum mechanics, general relativity, and quantum physics.
